Question:
Should I tell my Recruiter if I am unhappy on their project?
Answer:
Absolutely, if you have been placed on an assignment through a Recruiter and for one reason or another it is not working out as you had hoped and you are no longer happy, it is essential to let the Recruiter who placed you know as soon as possible.
Make the Recruiter be a resource for you, rather than doing a poor job because you are not engaged in the work, let the Recruiter know so that they can speak to the Manager on your behalf.
Many candidates do not even think this is an option although it is in the best interest of the Recruiter to do what they can to ensure that you stay on project so make them work for their commission and have that initial conversation on your behalf. Letting your Recruiter approach your Manager can help open the lines of communication and have a less awkward conversation when they finally bring you in to discuss.
The goal of the conversation is to bring to light challenges you are facing and dealing with expectations you were unaware of when you signed on to the project to see if they can be addressed and improved on to make you more successful and content in the role.
I would stress that occasionally Managers might decide you are not a fit at this point and could end your employment so do be aware and make sure you are not going to be put in a tough position if a termination is the option that the Manager decides to pursue.
Once the Recruiter has spoken to the Manager, they will have a better idea if they want to keep you on assignment or if they feel it might be a better idea to move on from the assignment and they can decide if they want to present you elsewhere (some will not do for one reason or another) or advise you to find a new Recruiter for your next opportunity.
Letting the Manager know up front will also help the Recruiter save face with the Hiring Manager rather than if you were to decide to simply quit without any notice and this way you have the potential to leave gracefully and not necessarily burn a bridge for both them and yourself if you had just called to tell them you are quitting which will also make Recruiter look bad with the client and not give them a chance to salvage the relationship.
